Hyundai Grand i10 Overview
The Hyundai Grand i10 was launched in global markets as a successor to the i10 but both the models continued to be sold along side each other in India. The Grand i10 has been extremely successful for Hyundai and it is also one of the top 10 selling cars in the country. Hyundai Grand i10 Design & Look
The facelift Grand i10 surely does not get a lot of change on its exterior but the subtle updates given by Hyundai to the new hatchback is certainly interesting. The Grand i10 is already popular for its bold, sporty and Dynamic exterior but its styling further gets a boost with the help of new radiator grille design, redesigned front bumpers which also houses new set of LED DRLs (daytime running lamps) along with fog lamps. The side profile of the facelift hatchback now hs been fitted with diamond cut 15 inch alloy wheels, while the roof rails helps give the hatchback the macho appeal. At the rear the Grand i10 now features a duel tone bumper with round shaped reflectors positioned on either side, last but not least the rear profile also sports an integrated roof spoiler which adds the dose of sporty nature to the car..
Hyundai Grand i10 Cabin & Space
As with the exterior, there are three big changes to the 2017 Grand i10’s insides as well. The top spec Asta trim now gets a single zone climate control; it has a fancier audio unit (detail explanation on that coming up); and now there’s a reversing camera as well. But, the highlight of the interior is the new multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. All it takes is a USB cable, the android auto app installed on your phone (should be the same for iPhone users) and a Bluetooth connection between the audio unit and the phone. And you are set.
Now, you can play music, read your texts and activate navigation via voice commands. This is the first time I have used Android Auto for prolonged periods in a car. And I must say, I am impressed. Also impressive, as before, is the practicality the Grand i10’s interior offers. It has a large cooled glovebox, lots of usable stowage space, and cup and bottle holders to keep a four-member party happy. There’s also little to complain about the seating comfort or space. Having said that, I am no longer a fan of the Grand’s interior design. The dash design looks a bit dated now and the large round dials for everything from air vents to aircon controls to even the instrumentation lacks imagination.
Hyundai Grand i10 Engine & Gearbox
The petrol engine is the same 1.2-litre Kappa unit churning out 81 HP at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm at 4000 RPM. The engine is mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed auto box which feels a bit dated. There are no changes to the petrol engine and it continues to offer average performance. Power delivery should be enough for those who don’t drive enthusiastically and most people driving in the city won’t complain. Gearshifts are smooth and the petrol unit gives out a fuel efficiency of 11-12 km/l in realistic conditions with the ARAI-claimed figures being 19.77 km/l and 17.49 km/l for the MT and AT variants respectively. However, the petrol engine now uses low friction bearings, Alternator Management System and improved oil viscosity levels which have led to a slight increase in efficiency. The earlier Grand i10 got a 1.1-litre U2 CRDI diesel engine and the facelift now gets a 1.2-litre engine which is based on the previous engine itself. It still is a 3-pot unit but now produces 74 HP of power at 4000 RPM compared to the earlier 70 HP. Peak torque has also increased from 160 Nm to 190 Nm from 1700 RPM. The increase in power and torque is very evident as the Grand i10 feels quick to accelerate and the engine has a very peppy feel to it, right from low RPMs. The mid range gets stronger and power delivery continues till 4000 RPM. 0-100 km/hr comes up in 13.5 seconds according to our VBOX tests and we managed to max out the car at a little over 170 km/hr.
The updated engine seems to have better NVH levels. It is a bit noisy when the car is idle and vibrates a bit when you turn the car on or off. At medium to high speeds, the engine feels pretty refined and not much of the clatter filters inside the cabin. It has an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 24.95 km/l and we managed to get around 18-19 km/l under a mix of city and highway driving, which also included a lot of enthusiastic driving. The gearshifts on the diesel engine also feel very smooth and the clutch is again extremely light.
Hyundai Grand i10 Driving Dynamics
The throttle response is sharper, there’s more grunt all across the rev range, and courtesy the gearing, one can’t really feel the turbo lag on the new car either. The 1.2D Grand i10 pulls cleanly all the way to 4,500rpm and though it gets noisy past 3,500rpm, one doesn’t really need to go there. Keep the Grand i10 1.2D between the 1,500 to 2,500rpm and it is happy to motor around in this rev range all day be it in the city or doing triple digit speeds on the highway.Ride is another strong quality of the Grand i10. It might seem a bit noisy over poor surfaces. But, the absorption quality and the suspension’s ability to keep all the tyres connected to the road no matter the size of bumps and potholes or the frequency and amplitude of road ripples, is excellent. It does make for a comfortable car.

Talking about the safety features, the facelift Grand i10 gets advanced safety features like Rear Parking Assist System with Dual Airbags, ABS, Reverse Parking Sensors and newly introduced Rear Parking Camera which displays all the output on the newly added 7.0 Inch touchscreen monitor.

Hyundai Grand i10 Final Thought
Totally loved the Grand i10 when we had one in our long term fleet and with this update, Hyundai has refreshed the car nicely. The new diesel engine is very good for the segment and even though it still is a 3-cylinder unit, I think it offers very good performance and efficiency. The Grand also has an excellent ride and is pretty easy to drive. The interiors boast of excellent quality materials and even the fit and finish of exterior panels is better than most rivals out there. For me, the Hyundai Grand i10 is easily one of the best city hatchbacks around.
