Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Overview
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 2018 is the second generation model of the seven-seater MUV. Boasting larger dimensions, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga variants can be had in diesel and petrol options. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Exterior & Look
The new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga undoubtedly grabs more attention than the earlier generation model. Especially, the heavy use of chrome on the grille, the higher-set hood and the increased size of the car, demands more attention like an SUV. Further, the SUVish appeal can be seen in the design tweaks such as flex lines on the bonnet and chiselled bumper. The swept back projector headlamp cluster neither have LED bulbs nor LED daytime running lights but it still looks stylish. There are aftermarkets kits available which would be able to cater individual needs.
The side profile looks lengthy as the car has gained 99mm of length. To many, the 15-inch alloys would appear slightly over styled. They are very similar to the Indonesian spec Ertiga. Then there is thick shoulder line that runs from the front fender all the way to the tail lights which helps the car reduce the bulk of the huge doors.
The rear is equally striking as the front with three-part boomerang-styled tail lamp with LED lights appears striking. It would give you a hint of a Volvo car. The company has done a commendable job to make this car look distinctive, without compromising on aggressive and yet retaining the style of an MPV.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Interior & Comfort
Inside, it’s all Maruti. The steering, the power window switches, the stalks and dials, the door handles, and even the gear shifter and the hand brake, lack any sort of originality. These are bits and pieces we have already seen on cars based on the same Heartect platform.What is unique though, is the dashboard design. It’s more upright. And, it doesn’t differentiate between the driver and the co-passenger in its flow. Much like in modern day luxury cars, there’s no pronounced central console; the dash just flows as if it were carved out of one block of solid plastic. I personally quite like it. And it lends the new Ertiga a more premium air as well.
The quality of materials is similar to what we have seen on Dzires and Balenos. Which is to say, you can’t really fault them on look and feel, or fit and finish unless you are nitpicking. But, yes, these don’t set any new segment benchmarks either.In terms of equipment, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and the irritating beeps at 80kmph and 120kmph come as standard on all cars. Furthermore, in this top-spec trim, there’s a touchscreen infotainment system complete with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. There’s digital climate control with an additional aircon setup for the rear passengers. There are cup and bottle holders for all three rows with the front two getting some dedicated venting as well to keep them drinks cools.
You get electric ORVMs with fold function; keyless entry and start; steering mounted controls; a detailed driver information system; and second and third row of seats with split and fold functionality. The last row seats – which can also be reclined – split 50:50 to add luggage volume. The second row seats – which recline and slide – split 60:40 to further add to the luggage-carrying flexibility on the Ertiga.And, on the subject of seats, the ones upfront are large, cushy, and even though a bit soft, these aren’t short on support. So, the seating comfort, even for extended periods of time, is good. The second row in comparison feels flat. The benchseats are accommodating, yes, but not the most supportive. As for the last row, these feel flatter than the second row even, and are much closer to the floor, making them literally the last resort.
Space wise, the Ertiga has grown, no doubt. There’s clearly more shoulder room all round, and with a second row that slides fore and aft, the flexibility to liberate space for the third row, remains. Additionally, thanks to the lower window line, a large rear door, and the big quarter glass between the C and D pillar, the Ertiga feels significantly more roomy now. There’s more room for luggage as well, even with the third row in place. The increase in length has played its part, no doubt.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Engine & Transmission
The new Maruti Ertiga is powered by new 1.5L K15 Smart Hybrid petrol engine which produces 105PS and 138Nm of peak torque which is up by 13PS and 8Nm from the previous model. The increase in power certainly reflects on the road with the car thrusts forward as soon as the driver applies pressure on the accelerator and leaves the foot off the clutch. The extra torque is also evident throughout the range which helps you drag forward loads of passengers and luggage, even going on uphill. And with the hill-hold assist function in the automatic variant, it will certainly be a boon on slanted road conditions, especially with full-load of passengers.
And as usual, the powertrain feels more energetic with the 5-speed manual gearbox than the 4-speed automatic, the latter is best for relaxed driving. The automatic transmission takes slightly more time to response to the gear changes and inputs from accelerator. So in terms of overtaking manoeuvres, you have to plan for that a bit early.
The diesel engine remains the same 1.3L DDiS which pumps out 89PS and max torque at 200Nm as was there in the earlier one. The engine is powered by 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel one obviously will be slightly laggy when you are starting off initially, but as the revs build up, you won’t feel much difference in the medium to high speeds. The car retains the diesel engine while the petrol engine is brand new. But irrespective of the old and new engines, the claimed fuel efficiency has gone up in the new Ertiga due to variety of factors including 20kgs less weight and mild-hybrid technology.So, the diesel variant returns ARAI certified mileage of 25.47kmpl as opposed to 24.52kmpl earlier. The petrol powered Ertiga, on the other hand, delivers 19.34kmpl with the manual transmission and 18.69kmpl with the automatic one, up from 17.50kmpl and 17.03kmpl in the earlier manual and automatic version of Ertiga, respectively.

The gear shifts are precise too. And, these have short throw as well. Plus, the clutch operation is both light and progressive which makes the new Ertiga easy to drive around in busy city traffic.Even out on the highway, the Ertiga holds its own quite well. Now, it doesn’t have a plush ride quality. In fact, one can both hear and feel the road below almost all the time. But, thankfully the ride never feels harsh. It also settles down well over poor surfaces courtesy good rebound damping.
So, over poorly laid or undulating roads, the Ertiga doesn’t throw its occupants around. It doesn’t wallow or bob. And, there isn’t pronounced side-to-side movement either; all of which otherwise would have added to discomfort.The new Ertiga, as a result, also feels planted and stable in a straight line. Even at high speeds. It handles the fast, long sweeping corners without a hint of nervousness as well. And, although we didn’t get to throw it around the really twisty stuff, given how light it feels on its feet, it should be good at that too. The brakes are progressive and have considered bite force. And the icing on the cake is that the carmaker has further bolstered the braking mechanism by adding ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as part of standard fitment package.
