Tata Zest Overview

The fast-paced growth of the sub-four meter sedan segment led Tata Motors envisage a credible product that could sustain stiff competition amid rivals including Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent. Inspired by Tata’s ‘DesigNext, DriveNext, ConnectNext’ philosophy, Zest was the first product to be built on the new design language.


The first product from Tata’s new breed of cars, Zest sports a fresh design. Interior styling is in tandem with the new design philosophy, giving prominence to the looks and features. Under the hood, it plonks a 1.2 litre Revotron petrol engine and a 1.3 litre Quadrajet diesel unit putting out power in two states of tune. Tata Zest Design & Style

One of the biggest consideration aspects while buying a car here in India, is the exterior design or styling. It is said, if you get the visual allure of a product right, that’s half the battle. On this front, the Zest is a huge step up over both the Vista and the Manza. The Zest still has that typical Tata smiley face, which Tata now calls the humanity line. It is the line that runs along the bottom of the grille and connects the headlamps. The headlamps look nicer too, and in this top of the line version, are projector type. The bumper with its large fog lamp housing and a reverse air dam design give the Zest an air of much-needed modernity.

In profile, the Zest doesn’t look very proportionate; it’s more like the Dzire – with a longer hood and a stubbier boot – than the Amaze which clearly is better balanced visually. But with a revised shoulder line and an upswept lower character line, it gives the Zest better road presence. It gets largest in class 15in wheels too. The design for the alloys isn’t exciting, but its size certainly helps the Zest’s stance. At the rear, the Tata Zest has LED tail lamps, a well-defined bumper and boot lid with a thick chrome line dominating proceedings.

The most crucial change for us on the Zest compared to the Vista on which it is based, is the revised interior. The quality of materials, both in look and feel, have improved significantly. And the design is way more inviting and pleasing that before. It actually looks upmarket now; something we haven’t said about Tata products too often. The play of colours – black and beige, the shapely aircon vents, the gloss black finish around the centre console and the instrument binnacle, and subtly used chrome highlights, all help in achieving this.

Tata Zest Cabin & Comfort

Step inside the cabin of the Zest and you can clearly see that there is a lot of thought put into making this a world class cabin. The layout, design of every element in here and the fit and finish is comparable to anything else in the segment. This is the first time I think I have ever been able to appreciate anything Tata Motors has done to the interiors of its cars and there is no doubt why.

This maturity in the interior design has more to do with the attention to the smallest of details. Sit in and grab hold of the steering wheel and you immediately feel the lightness and suppleness in the way it’s been designed. In the past Tata Motors cars had a very clunky, beefy steering wheel, almost as if to say the chunkier the wheel felt in your hand the more secure the driving experience. The layout and feel of the centre console, the sweep of the dashboard enveloping the instrument binnacle behind the steering wheel, the delicately poised air-con vents flowing with the sweep of that dashboard and small highlights like the mirror finished plastic strip above the glovebox that resembles a luxurious wood finish, all speak of a coming-of-age that’s been long awaited.

What’s even more surprising is the fit and finish of this cabin, the quality standards have improved dramatically. There isn’t a single panel gap to be found anywhere inside this cabin and the same goes for the exterior fit and finish. And it’s not just the exacting fit but also the quality of materials used. One component that does lend a fair amount of design aesthetic to this interior is the 2-Din audio system from Harman. The quality audio makers, often found only in high-end luxury cars, have begun making audio systems for more affordable cars like the Tata Zest. This touch screen is not just well finished, it’s got a host of features that will send most of the competition running back to the drawing board. This system not only plays music, but once your phone is hooked through Bluetooth, it will read out your text messages and even control audio and air-con functions through a voice command system. The interface is simple to use though there are some minor glitches. Overall though this is a remarkable unit and one that would also reproduce good sound quality if you employ better speakers.

Tata Zest Engine & Gearbox

This is one area where Tata Motors claimed to have cracked revolutionary changes with its first in class 1.2 litre Turbocharged MPFi petrol engine. So what’s so special one would ask? To begin, the 1.2 litre petrol power plant features shift-on-fly technology which basically aims to provide three different driving modes comprising of Economy, City and Sport. In detail, the petrol variant comes loaded with an 1193cc engine on board that puts out a maximum power output of 89 bhp with 140 Nm of torque.

All of this basically translates to an impressive engine performance which is said to be extracted out of a modern water cooled turbocharger that aims to provide faster, flatter response along with better torque spread. Having said this, there is a bit of turbo lag especially lower down the revs, the presence of a 5 speed synchromesh gearbox catering to smooth shift indicates that the Zest is perfectly packaged and meant for Indian conditions. Its ride quality, we must say is at par with rest of the competition within its segment as going over potholes and broken roads isn’t really an issue. Throw it at corners and curves, the Zest will do its best in providing decent handling as per its ability. Having mentioned all three driving modes earlier, its Sport mode really tinkles the maximum power from the engine making it rev all the way to 5,500rpm where in the needle automatically changes its colour to red indicating ‘redline’. Just to highlight the petrol model runs on ‘City’ which is its default mode.

This is just not it, for the increasingly competitive and growing diesel compact car segment Tata Motors have come out with an automatic diesel option which is again a first for this category. Interested in knowing more, christened as F-Tronic AMT, Zest diesel caters to a 4 cylinder; turbo intercooled 1248cc diesel engine that gives out a maximum power output of 89 bhp with 200 Nm of torque. Featuring a 5 speed F-Tronic AMT with Shift Assist Manual, the manufacturer has tried to address driving comfort for an end consumer considering that automatics are a boon nowadays keeping our traffic conditions in mind. The diesel provides two modes for driving; normal and sport. In normal mode the sedan remains subdued and goes about taking its occupants swiftly to places while the sports is more torque heavy relating to better power for those swift getaways.

Here is the interesting bit about Tata Motors, they finally seem to have realised that weight is a negative characteristic. Hence one of the efforts in the Zest has been to keep weight in check, resulting in a kerb weight of just 1,170kg for the diesel and 1,115 – 1,135kg for the petrol. Now this isn’t class leading, that distinction goes to the Etios which is as light as 920kg. Yet Tata Motors seems to have understood the fact that being light helps achieve better performance and efficiency. So the monocoque chassis has been lightened and strengthened to achieve better results and give it a more secure dynamic feel. A zero pivot subframe isolates vibrations while making significant contributions to stability.

The suspension is an independent type with a McPherson strut setup complemented by an anti-roll bar at the front. At the rear, the suspension is semi-independent with a twist beam. The suspension is similar to previous generation cars but it has been tweaked and the ride has gotten firmer as a result of using springs and a new dual-path shock absorber that offers stiffer damping rates. Now the ride isn’t firm enough like say some of the German cars but it’s firmer than ever before. The rigidity in the suspension coupled with an anti-roll bar reduces body roll and the Zest is quite surprising in that aspect. High speed stability is impressive and so are her cornering abilities which she executes almost flawlessly. As I mentioned before, the Zest is the first Tata Motors car that I’ve had immense fun driving and part of that comes from the knowledge that she is secure, confident and poised to digest almost everything you dish out to her.

The 2,470mm wheelbase coupled with the 1,706mm track adds to that stability factor but there are other contributors as well. The electrically assisted power steering developed in association with ZF Lenksysteme who also worked on the Tata Nano is quite impressive, though in the diesel it for some reason felt a bit heavier than in the petrol. There is no feedback but neither is it oversensitive or one-finger-employing light.The brakes are a disc and drum combination but you get the current generation ABS with EBD and they are effective, sharp and on our short drive, the brakes did not fade out even once, which was something last generation Tata Motors cars faced a lot of issues with.

Tata Zest Safety & Security

Safety provisions on the Zest comprise dual front airbags for driver and co-passenger, immobilizer, speed dependent auto door lock system, front fog lamps, ABS with EBD & CSC, front seat belts with pretensioner & load limiter and perimetric alarm system. Tata has added a lot of elements to enhance the exterior appearance such as projector headlamps with LED light guide rings, LED indicators on ORVMs, LED DRLs, chrome garnish around windows and LED tail lamps. Tata Zest Final Word

It must be said that Zest is probably Tata’s best and well coveted attempt to target most sort after compact sedan segment. It actually breaks away from what we Indians are used to seeing in Tata Motors product portfolio till date as this sedan brings forward the company’s latest design philosophy and engineering to conquer competition. In sheer performance, the petrol is the one that impresses the most while the availability of an automatic in diesel is definitely going to attract a great number of seekers. The attractive pricing at which the company has launched the Zest into the market, will surely pull a lot of customers towards it, especially when it comes to the first-in-segment diesel automatic variant.

Tata has seen an incredible jump in quality, design and engineering with the new Zest. This compact sedan is spacious and at the same time matches the international standards for quality. The Harman music system is the first in this segment and the music quality is just brilliant. The 1.2 Revotron engine is marvellous, especially its drivability. There isn’t any turbo lag, however the punch from the turbo too isn’t very prominent. This car moves even in the fifth gear at 40km/hr. On the other hand, the diesel AMT is another segment first. It offers people to get a diesel engine and free up their left leg from clutching and declutching. It needs some improvement in shifts, else it is fine. The Zest as an overall is a great product with several positives and a couple of small negatives, which can be easily fixed.
